Round Rock may only be 20 miles north of the Live Music Capital of the World, but in terms of vibe and attitude, it’s a world of difference. Even though it’s an official city, Round Rock is often referred to as an Austin suburb, and for good reason—here, the neighborhoods are sprawling, the lawns manicured, and the big-box shopping (IKEA, anyone?) plentiful. This pleasant way of life has garnered the city plenty of accolades—Round Rock was named the seventh-best American small city, as well as the second-fastest growing small city, and, most recently, America’s third most affordable city. This “super suburb” as it’s called, boasts the privacy and space of spread-out living with the friendly community of a small town—certainly an ideal place to make your new home on the range.
If you’re planning to make Round Rock your new home, it helps to be the athletic type—after all, this city has earned the nickname “Sports Capital of Texas”. Catch a home game at the Dell Diamond to cheer on minor league baseball team Round Rock Express, cruise the free public skate park, or spend the day at 645-acre Old Settler’s Park, which includes 6 complexes for a range of sports—disc golf, cricket, baseball, softball, and soccer. In sweltering Texas summers, hit the water slides at Rock’n River Family Aquatic Center. If you like your fun a little less sweaty, visit the quaint downtown for authentic Texas fare at mom-and-pop-owned Round Rock Café, or hand-shaved margaritas on the patio of local favorite El Monumento. For donuts as large as your head, pay a trip to Western-themed Round Rock Donuts—they were even featured on Travel Channel’s Man vs! Food. Plus, you can always work off the calories afterward with a marathon shopping spree at IKEA, or the Round Rock Premium Outlet Mall.
Round Rock is also an excellent place to develop your education or career—after all, it’s best known for being the international headquarters of Dell, and tech giants IBM and Samsung have offices of their own there, too. Round Rock is home to a wealth of higher education facilities, including the Texas State University Round Rock campus, Texas A&M Health Science Center, and the largest branch campus of Austin Community College. Younger learners will benefit, too—the Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) ranks among the best in the state.
Looking for a peaceful place to call home or raise your family that’s also close to big-city conveniences? Round Rock, Texas is calling your name.
